How its made eggs packaging – Discovery/ Science channel’s team visits a factory and makes a documentary on how the eggs are treated and packaged before they come into market. It’s really an amazing experience to know about whole procedure. This episode has been played on Science channel few days ago and now i am sharing it with you guys, because i found it really interesting and educational documentary film. I always love to know about the things which we use in our daily life.
Hens don’t have to mate to lay eggs and as long as there is no rooster in the vicinity, the eggs will remain unfertilized and edible. The color of the shell is determined by the breed of hen, but there is no packing order when it comes to shell color. White or brown, all eggs are the same inside. The action begins in the hen house where female chickens start laying eggs when they are 19 weeks old. The temperature and humidity are strictly controlled where hens are kept. To stimulate laying, they stimulate 15 hour of daylight. The hens eat food three times a day. There feed is made up of various grains mixed with soybeans for protein. It is fortified with vitamins and minerals and contains calcium to strengthen the egg shells. The hens also drink water from the nipple ended tubes attached to their cages. All these carefully monitored conditions are designed to maximize the yield. The average hen lays about 300 eggs a year. The eggs automatically roll onto a conveyor belt. Then its onto a larger conveyor belt which transport the eggs to the packaging room. Some eggs do get dirty and those eggs are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected later on. Automated equipment transfers the eggs onto plastic flaps keeping the yolks properly centered. The flaps go into a cold room until a refrigerated truck ships them to the grading station, who’s job is to classify the eggs by quality.
The best grade eggs end up on supermarket shelves, lessor grace go to processing plant to be turned into ingredients to be used in foods and products such as shampoos. This automated station is high-tech and high speed, processing 144000 eggs per hour. First the suction machine lifts the eggs off the flap and transfers them onto a moving track, leading them to a cleaning station. There a washer scrubs the eggs with soap and disinfectants, then they are put into a dryer for 5 seconds. Then eggs pass over a bright light, which highlights the condition of egg shell. Workers remove the cracked eggs and then cameras inspect the inside for blood. Then sensors tap on the eggs to check the strength of the eggs. After this process the eggs are marked to give grades. The passing grade is Grade A. Then eggs are moved to the corresponding packaging machine, where eggs get packed. The expiration period for an egg is 35 days and for the hen it is 72 weeks, for all their hard work, hens win a trip to the slaughter house.
